How do I help support dad?

The birth environment is unfamiliar and sometimes uncomfortable for the father, but for me this is normal and familiar territory. Often times when mothers need the fathers the most is when they are less likely to be able to communicate their needs. During these stressful times it is great to have a mediator in the room who is comfortable and familiar with these situations. I am there to help take the pressure off the dad so that he is able to be involved at his comfort level. It helps to have another person available to get ice, get the bags, make phone calls so that the father can continue to support the mom or if the dad needs to do these jobs I can stay and support the mom.

A doula in no way replaces the dad.

I can help remind when is a good time to change positions, walk around, get into the shower/bath, so that the dad doesn't have to keep track of all the information he learned at the childbirth class. I help guide the dad through this unknown journey and help the dad to do as much as he feels comfortable with.
